Description:
The Savennières appellation is in the Anjou-Saumur region of the Loire, near the town of Angers covering about 120 hectares and is one of the smallest French appellations. The Château D'Epiré is one of the oldest and most famous vineyards of the appellation and dates back to 1640. The Château that exists today was built in 1850.The estate is 11 hectares which includes 9 hectares of vineyards that is planted to Chenin Blanc. The vineyard is on the highest slopes of the area at the town of D'Epiré and is divided into three parcels, the Park next to the Castle, La Croix Picot just over the Loire, very stony and Le Hu-Boyau next to the famous "Coulée de Serrant".
Winery:
Where the wines are made is the greatest curiosity, an 11th century Roman church which stands astride the boundary wall of the Château was deconsecrated and converted into a cellar in 1906. The currant owner Luc Bizad's grandfather purchased the church in 1882. This is very rare, you have to enter the church to realize you are in a winery and that the pews have been replaced with barrels. For those that believe wine is a spiritual experience, this is as close as you will get to that heavenly truth with one of the great white wines of France.
Vinification:
The grapes are hand picked in a series of three to four passes through the vineyard over a two to four week period in order to harvest all of the grapes at their ripest. The grapes are soft pressed and the juice is put into small tanks for fermentation, then transferred to barrel for maturation over the next six months. A light filtration is then done before bottling in June-just before summer.
Bouquet or Aromas:
The color is medium yellow straw, showing its age; but don't let that fool you. The flavors wafting from the glass are full of dry hay, minerals, chalky soil, grapefruit, quince, green apples and field herbs. The nose is rich and penetrating from the age of the wine with layers of aromas that keep changing in the glass. Some people would not try a white wine at this age but to those who will, the reward will be yours.
Taste:
On the palate, the same rich notes of dry hay, grapefruit, quince, green apple and field herbs. The minerals are well integrated with hints of dry fruit and soft chalky soil. The flavors are long, pronounced and lingering, with a hint of oxidation for flavor. A bit of toasty, earthy notes that follow through on the long lingering finish. A truly ripe older aged wine that shows its pedigree.
Pairings:
This wine will pair well with rich full flavored dishes, such as seafood stews, grilled fish, oysters fresh or grilled, roasted chicken, chicken with forty cloves of garlic and chicken dishes from Spain or Italy with olives, caper or anchovies as well as Mediterranean meat dishes.
Cheese Pairing:
Shropshire Blue Colston Basset
