Name Annunciation Percentage Description
Description:
The Baroni vineyard extends for about 3 hectares along the road of the same name in the southeastern-most corner of Sicily in the Val di Noto (Siracusa) at about 50 meters above sea level. The climate in this area, further south than Tunis, is temperate-hot Mediterranean. The vineyard is organically dry-farmed and the grapes are hand picked. Nero d'Avola when translated means "black Avola" the black grape of Avola. Nero d'Avola has grown in the commune of Noto in the provinces of Ragusa and Caltagirone for centuries.
Winery:
The center of the winery is located in Val Canzeria, below the town of Chiaramonte Gulfi, about 500 meters above sea level, in the area of the Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG wines in the province of Ragusa. Scattered in the best areas of Pachino are the five single vineyards of Gulfi in the Val di Noto (Siracusa) where there are
more than 60 hectares planted to the Nero d'Avola grape. The plant density is 7,000 vines per hectare and the more than 30 year old vines yield no more than 40 quintals per hectare.
Vinification:
The Nero d'Avola grapes are harvested in the second half of September. The grapes are crushed and then put through a long slow maceration with the skins. Fermented, racked, then put through malolactic fermentation
and racked to small 225 liter barrels where it is allowed to age for 18 months. The wine is then bottled and allowed to age several months before being released.
Bouquet or Aromas:
Ruby red with deep violet reflections, red fruit of black cherry, blackberry and red plum with hints of vanilla on the nose. Mineral and spice linger in the nose with hints of new leather, sweet toasted oak and dried herbs. These aromas are among the most pronounced flavor of the Nero d'Avola grape. A grape cultivated to its best at the Gulfi Estate.
Taste:
On the palate you will experience a core of ripe fruits of cherry, blackberry and plum, mineral, spice and earthy notes of dry flowers and horse leather. The flavors are super-ripe Nero d'Avola that has an accessible easygoing personality that will excite and amaze you. The richness of these wines are most enjoyable and give you many nuances that are sure to please.
Pairings:
This wine has the liveliest tartness of all the Nero d'Avola's and needs very flavorful rich prime meats. Good with fresh (real tuna red and fibrous), pork in any rich compound dish or Mediterranean dish that uses tomato and red pepper such as a great pasta or risotto. This Nero D'Avola fares well with all those winter dishes that use herbs and mushrooms imparting rich earthy flavors.
Cheese Pairing:
Red Leicester
