Name Annunciation Percentage Description
Description:
The Bufaleffi vineyard extends for about 2.5 hectares in an area of the same name at 50 meters above sea level in the Val di Noto (siracusa) in the renown region of Pachino, located at the southeastern-most tip of Sicily. The vineyard is distinguished by the highly colorful soil composed of black clay, white limestone and red sand. The wine is made from 100% Nero d'Avola grapes, organically dry-farmed and hand picked. Nero d'Avola when translated means "black Avola" the black grape of Avola.
Winery:
The center of the winery is located in Val Canzeria, below the town of Chiaramonte Gulfi, about 500 meters above sea level, in the area of the Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG wines in the province of Ragusa. Scattered in the best areas of Pachino are the five single vineyards of Gulfi in the Val di Noto where there are more than 60 hectares planted to Nero d'Avola. The planting density is 7,000 vines per hectare. The vines are over 35 years old with a yield of no more than 40 quintals per hectare.
Vinification:
The Nero d'Avola grapes are harvested in the second half of September. The grapes are crushed and then put through a long slow maceration with the skins. Fermented , racked then put through malolactic fermentation
and then racked to small 225 liter barrels where it is allowed to age for 18 months. The wine is then bottled and allowed to age several more months before being released.
Bouquet or Aromas:
Ruby red with deep violet reflections, black fruit of black cherry, blackberry and black plum with hints of vanilla on the nose. There are hints of mineral and spice that mingle with the scents of new leather and a rich earthiness, toasted oak and dry herbs. There is plenty of structure with well balanced tannins to fruit and this wine will reward your with a little bottle aging or decanting.
Taste:
On the palate you will experience the follow through of ripe fruits of black cherry, blackberry and black plum, minerality, spice and earthy notes of dry flowers, herbs and real leather. The Nero d'Avola is super-ripe in this wine and really shows its pedigree. This wine could be considered an over the top wine but the balance of fruit, acid and tannins bring it together in great harmony.
Pairings:
This wine expresses the lively tartness the Nero d'Avola is known for. With time it is this character that will show the greatest elegance. The wine does very well with elaborate, intense fish dishes. Dishes of risotto's with wild mushrooms or rich fatty meats in all types of preparation.
Cheese Pairing:
Shropshire Blue Colston Basset
