Description:
The San Lorenzo vineyard is one of the five single vineyards of Gulfi and is located nearest to the sea at about 10 meters above sea level and just 700 meters away and extends 2.5 hectares along the road of the same name. The wine is made from 100% Nero d'Avola grapes, grown in accordance to the principles of organic dry-framing and hand-picked on the old bush-vines. Nero d'Avola when translated means "Black Avola" the black grape of Avola. Nero d'Avola has grown in the commune of Noto in the provinces of Ragusa and Caltagirone for centuries.
Winery:
The center of the winery is located in Val Canzeria, below the town of Chiaramonte Gulfi, about 500 meters above sea level, in the area of the Cerasuolo di Vittoria DOCG wines in the province of Ragusa. Scattered in the best areas of Pachino are the five single vineyards of Gulfi in the Val di Noto (Siracusa) where there are more than 60 hectares planted to the Nero d'Avola grape. The more than 40 year-old vines yield only about 40 quintals per hectare.
Vinification:
The Nero d'Avola grapes are harvested in the second half of September and first go through a long maceration period. The wine is then put through malolactic fermentation before it is put into small 225 liter barrels where
it is allowed to age another 18 months. After bottling, the wine is rested for several more months before being released.
Bouquet or Aromas:
The wine is ruby red with deep violet reflections of black cherry, blackberry and black plum from deep red fruit. There are hints of sweet vanilla, minerals, spices, dry flowers, new leather and a scent of the ocean. This vineyard is the closest to the ocean and you can smell the hints of the sea. The structure in intense and balanced with multiple aromas coming at you with every waft.
Taste:
On the palate all the great aromas are present: black cherry, blackberry, black plum, minerals, spices and that wonderful scent of new leather. This Nero d'Avola is super rich and ripe with layers and layers of fruit and earthiness. This is my favorite because I can see the ocean with every taste. A wine to be shared and saved for those memorable times we all share with friends.
Pairings:
The San Lorenzo Gulfi is a perfect wine for fish sauces and dense fish soups. At home with elaborate
Mediterranean risotto and pasta dishes filled with tomatoes, herbs, capers, olive oil, vegetables and any more flavorful fish. If you are pairing this wine with meat, try rich silky meats like lamb, or poultry that is cooked in a rich tomato and herb sauce.
Cheese Pairing:
Pecorino Toscano Stagionato
