Description:
Parraleta is an indigenous grape from the Somontano region of Spain and is now quite rare. Somontano is located in the ancient Aragones kingdom of Sobrarbe in the province of Huesca. The grapes are from some of the oldest vines in the region. It is a small bunch variety of medium compactness. The grape is a medium sized spherical shape with bluish black skin and a short stem. The first vintage was bottled in 2004 and 3,000 bottles are produced annually. The Spanish word Somonano literally means "at the foot of the mountain".
Winery:
Developed in 1993, Bodega Pirineos is the product of the innovative DO Somontano wine cooperative and the Aragon government. The resulting company has access to the oldest indigenous grape vines in the area. One example of this is the Parraleta grape which had previously fallen into obscurity. Bodega Pirineos produces the Parraleta wine from vines that are over 100 years old. Bodega Pirineos is located in the Pyrénées Mountains from which it derived its name. The Bodega is located in Barbastro en route to the medieval town of Alquezar.
Vinification:
Fermented following the most traditional techniques with 7-day maceration. After draining the free-run juice and blending it with the press-wine, it undergoes malolactic fermentation in new American medium toasted oak barrels with a further aging period of six months before it is bottled. The registered vineyards area of the Somontano is very small, only 4,200 acres. The soil is well-drained chalk and sand. Glacial runoff provides moisture during summer drought while the Pyrenees provide north winds. The fruit is harvested in the third week of September.
Bouquet or Aromas:
Deep purple to the rim color with ruby tones. Evocative and complex bouquet of fruited strawberry and raspberry, herbs and ink intermingle with spices of cinnamon, pepper and toasty new oak.
Taste:
Rich fruit flavors of strawberry and raspberry with a velvet texture. Herbs and spices such as cinnamon and pepper intermingle on the palate. In the mouth it is lively, complex and full of flavor. It is an original, unique and exotic wine of which only 3000 bottles have been produced.
Pairings:
Ideal for all types of barbequed or roasted meat, hearty game dishes and rich flavorful meat sauced pasta dishes, as well as rich roasted pork or boar dishes and spicy sausage plates.
Cheese Pairing:
Shropshire Blue Colston Basset
