Description:
Albariño is the primary grape varietal in the Rias Baixas wine area of the Galicia region of Northwestern Spain - "Wine of the sea" as it is know in Spain. Albariño is considered by many to be Spain's premier white wine, and is also known as Alvarinho in Portugal. Albariño grapes develop thick skins and are very aromatic with intense aromas and flavors. Albariño is not planted elsewhere in Spain or in Europe but there are 150 acres planted in the United States.
Winery:
Bodegas Nora is owned by Javier Alen the producer of Viña Mein and Victor Rodriguez, director of Vino y Gastronomia, the most respected wine and food magazine in Spain. The winery is located 12 miles from the historic village of Tui, on the border of the sub appellation of Cindado del Tea, on the northern banks of the Miño River north of the border of Portugal. Bodegas Nora is a small 48-acre estate that specializes in the production of the Albariño grape. The 20 year old vines are surrounded by pine and eucalyptus forests dotted with the ruins of ancient Celtic fortresses.
Vinification:
From a single vineyard of 2 hectares that is severely green harvested to reduce the yields to 2.2 tons per hectare (.89 tons per acre). 90% stainless steel fermented and aged sur lie in the tank with 10% fermented in large format French Allier oak barrels. Aged in barrel for seven months. The vineyards are a combination of alluvial gravel and sandy granite.
Bouquet or Aromas:
Light straw color, floral, citrus of lime and kiwi with a slightly flinty, mineral note and dried exotic fruits and honey on the nose. Scents of almond or almond paste, apples, peaches and citrus with flower or grass notes.
Taste:
Crisp and fruity with apricots, pineapple, apple, citrus and mineral notes with a good balance and length on the finish. Albariños tend to have a racy acid, making them superb food wines.
Pairings:
Albariños are superb with seafood, particularly shellfish. This Albariño is oak aged and can stand up to rich seafood dishes like Cioppino or rich fish stews, as well as pastas in a cream sauce or your favorite chicken dish. It is rare to find a white wine that is ageable and gets better with age. Enjoy with all your best dishes.
Cheese Pairing:
Urgelia
