Description:
Alquézar Moristel is the result of a 20-year collaboration between Classical wines and the local growers cooperative, which controls over 90% of the old Moristel vines in the Somontano wine region. Somontano is located in the ancient Aragonés kingdom of Sobrarbe in the province of Huesca. The registered vineyard area of Somontano is only 3,200 hectares of which 900 are planted to Moristel. The Moristel grape is loose-bunched, delicate skined, bright flavor and low in oxidative enzymes. The young wine is simply mouthwatering, with a velvety tender texture, vibrant loganberry aroma and quite focused like a top Cru Beaujolais.
Winery:
The cooperative is located in the mountain town of Alquézar at the foothills of the Pyrenées mountains. The soils are well-drained chalk and sand. Glacial runoff provides moisture during the summer drought while
the Pyrenées provide tempering north winds.
Vinification:
Three distinct winemaking techniques are involved: Fermentation of de-stemmed whole berries, whole bunch
fermentation (carbonic maceration) and bleeding of the must for higher skin-to-juice ratio. After blending the cuvée goes directly to new oak casks for malolactic fermentation, where the wine is naturally clarified before
bottling.
Bouquet or Aromas:
The 100% Moristel is brightly aromatic with a deep red ruby, purple color. On the nose you will pickup aromas of earth, black currants, loganberry, mineral and a hint of flowers. Hints of spice, white pepper with notes of dried leaves and twigs. A truly unique wine from Spain.
Taste:
The palate is bright, fresh and full of black currant, cherry, loganberry with a finish that is dry, mildly woody and a very pleasant lingering tannin. The wine has very nice chewy, bright fruit with great structure. A slightly tart cranberry type finish with good tannin structure makes it very appealing.
Pairings:
This wine is to be enjoyed with simple preparation foods like hamburgers, roasted lamb or pork. Grilled steaks and roasts are great matches for this wine. Beef short ribs roasted with root vegetables on buttered pasta would work very well. Try it with barbequed turkey or chicken on a Saturday afternoon.
Cheese Pairing:
Robiola La Tur
