Description:
Fiano is an ancient grape that has been cultivated in the territory of Irpinia within Campania for over 2000 years. The grape, Fiano, was originally called Vitis Apiana in Latin because the grapes were so sweet they attracted bees or api. The vines were brought to Campania by the Palasgian's (an ancient Greek people), from the Peloponnese and precisely from the peninsular of Mareci. The Fiano wines are made from grapes cultivated on open and sunny terrains in the area around the town of Avellino and from twenty-five other nearby towns.
Winery:
Aminea was founded in 1997 and produced their first vintage in 1999. The winery is located in the town of Montemarano in the heart of the Taurasi appellation. Montemarano is a tiny village located in the highest part of the mountain chain which encompasses the region of Irpinia. This hilly area runs along and overlooks the Calore River. Today, the Aminea company is owned and managed by three partners. Each has his own profession but are united by a common passion for wine. The three families own 45 acres of land and purchase wine from growers in the area allowing them to double their production. Aminea is a dynamic, young company with plans to build a new winery within the next three years. Montemarano is well known for its carnival. The event has been handed down since the 17th. Century.
Vinification:
100% Fiano di Avellino is grown at 1,485 feet above sea level with northeastern exposure. The grapes were harvested in October, crushed and vinified in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation was partially carried out and the wine aged minimally prior to being bottled.
Bouquet or Aromas:
The wine has a light straw yellow color with aromas of green melon and flint. Hints of hazelnuts and pine nuts. There is a pleasant minerality to the wine with lots of light basil notes from the calcareous soil the vines grow in. You can also pick up hints of roasted walnuts that mingle very well with the mineral notes. This is a well structured wine that delivers the perfect rich aromas enticing you to take that first sip.
Taste:
On the palate, the wine offers a smooth rich attack, with a creamy mouth feel, and notes of mandarin orange. The wine has just the right amount of acidity, balanced with the minerality, to be refreshing and enjoyable. In the middle mouth you pick up the influence of the hazelnut and pine nuts with just the faintest touch of basil. The finish has that wet stone and minerality taste allowing this wine to pair perfectly with the great dishes of this region of Italy.
Pairings:
With all the abundant, generous flavors of nuts and minerality, it matches splendidly with fish dishes, white meat dishes and soft cheeses. This wine is a great match for any dish where pesto is used, it's the minerality and nut flavors that makes it work so well.
Cheese Pairing:
Taleggio
