Description:
A lively, local wine from Calatayud, Spain. The most rugged region of Aragon with a 2000 year history of wine-making. Made from the Macabeo grape grown on 30 year old bush vines high in the mountains. It is the most popular light-skinned grape of northern Spain. The Macabeo grape takes well to hot and dry regions. It buds late making less likely to be damaged by frost. Together with the Parellada and Xarello grape it is widely used in the production of the sparkling wine, cava. Macabeo in Spain is also know as Viura.
Winery:
A pioneer among the wineries of the appellation of Rueda, Bodegas Veracruz sits in the town of Nava del Rey. The original family winery sits deep beneath the town's ancient Catholic church, the Ermita Veracruz. Ermita Veracruz is produced in a modern style from low yielding 35 year old vines, in a delightful combination of old and new. The 2003 vintage was the first Spanish white to win a Gold medal at the International Wine Challenge in the last 3 years.
Vinification:
The grapes are put under inert gas shortly after the night time harvest in order to preserve the ultimate freshness of the fruit. The wine is fermented in stainless steel tanks and then bottle aged for a few months prior to release.

Bouquet or Aromas:
Light gold color, the 2005 nose is full of passion fruit, grapefruit and pear, with complex herbal and mineral notes. Hints of honeysuckle, green apple, gooseberry, lemon zest and stones. You will also find well defined notes of grass and herb-accented citrus on the nose ending with hints of petrol and pine. This wine is very complex and definitely worth a try.
Taste:
On the palate, strongly herbal with deep lemon and orchard fruit flavors, soft acidity and a gentle finish. This wine shows a bit more developed vibrant combination of pear and mineral along with the balanced acid showing excellent quality and demonstrating the best of the Verdejo varietal. With notes of spice, guava, mango and lychee fruit. Sweet up front, yet dry with racy acidity.
Pairings:
Great as an aperitif wine, works with pasta dishes, fresh prepareed fish dishes and all kinds of chicken dishes. Pasta dishes with shrimp, scallops, mussels in a steamed cream sauce and poached fish as well and chicken dishes with cream sauces or rich broth with summer vegetables.
Cheese Pairing:
Pont L’Évêque
