Description:
The Lurton brothers have always been motivated by a challenge. In the 80's, Spain had a reputation for making excellent red wines but not whites. Jacques Lurton saw the unexploited potential of the Rueda region, lying just west of the Ribera del Duero, for whites. In 1992, the Lurton brothers set up Hermanos Lurton in the village of La Seca, Spain. The Rueda Appellation was established in 1980. It is adjacent to the Toro and Ribera del Duero appellations. It is spread over 3 provinces (Valladolid, Avila, Serovia) and contains some 7700 hectares of vines set at altitudes of between 600 and 700 meters.
Winery:
The winery is located in the provine of Valladolid and is spread over 2 areas belonging to the Rueda appellation of Le Seca, with gravely and sandy-silty soils and Rueda with clay-silty soils. The average age of the vines are 15 years.
Vinification:
All the grapes are hand-harvested and brought to the winery in small bins to avoid crushing or oxidation, followed by maceration on the skins for about 12 hours. Pneumatic pressing, then cold racking, addition of yeast, followed by temperature controlled fermentation. The juice is racked to stainless steel vats and aged sur lie for about four months before bottling.
Bouquet or Aromas:
Pale, very clear yellow with glints of green. Very intensity dominated by the fruity side of Verdejo. White peaches with notes of apricot, candied fruits, with a hint of fresh butter. Hints of peach stone and melon giving the wine an impression of sweetness.
Taste:
Beautiful freshness that balances well in the mouth. Nicely ripe white peaches and melons. The weight is perfect with an acidic finish that is very satisfying. Verdejo a variety mainly from Rueda, it gives roundness, length and fruity peach and apricot flavors. Viura a variety emerging in the 20th century, known under the name Macabeo in La Rioja brings acidity and freshness.
Pairings:
I would pair this wine with seafood dishes, pasta dishes and games birds made in a broth or cream sauce. White meat game birds such as pheasant, dove, quail and even dishes made with rabbit. Rabbit in a champagne cream sauce as well as chicken or pasta in a cream sauce would work very well.
Cheese Pairing:
Brillat-Savarin Affinée
