Description:
The Huber Estates were established in 1986 with the first vines being planted in 1987. The premier grapes of the appellation, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, are grown on the estate, as is a German red grape varietal called Dornfelder. For years the Huber grapes were purchased by Gainey and Rusack, just to name a few. The first wines to début under the Huber label, was the 2000 harvest. The Dornfelder grape was developed in Germany in 1956 to add color and body to the German Pinot Noir ( Spätburgunder). The cuttings were sent to the Hubers by friends who visited the vineyard and thought they needed a bit of their native Germany in their vineyards.
Winery:
Huber wines are made in the "Lompoc Wine Ghetto", an industrial park that houses some of the best winery operations in the county. Just to name a few neighboring production facilities, you will find Brewer-Clifton, Fiddlehead, Longoria, Palmina, Sea Smoke and Stolpman. The vineyards are located across hiway 246 from the Babcock winery on Hapgood road and are now managed by the Brewer-Clifton Viticultural management team headed by Francisco Ramirez.
Vinification:
It took a few years to figure out how to manage these bold grapes! With the 2005 vintage, winemaker Norm Yost has managed to tame these grapes. Working with the strong flavors and tannins wes the challenge. Proper pump-over's, fermentation and aging was the order of the day to tame this grape but the effort has been worth the end result, a rich, lush wine with great depth and lush fruit. A must try before it's gone.
Bouquet or Aromas:
Dornfelder can barely be called a red wine, in that it is so dark, it almost appears to be black-purple with legs of black glycerin that stains the glass. Fresh blackberries and anise notes with hints of violets, raw meat and caramelized vanilla. There are notes of earthy must with a rich concentration of black fruit, dry hay and a hint of mushroom and forest herbs.
Taste:
On the palate you will find rich fruits of blackberry jam, dark plum, black currant, elderberry, Marion berry and spicy hints of cloves. There is a very subtle hint of acid on the front, then massive fruit and just the right tannin to finish. The best way to describe this wine, it's a great Syrah without all the tannin on the finish.
Pairings:
Dornfelder pairs exquisitely with barbecued ribs and all the hearty meats that are grilled or roasted. Try braised veal breast, roasted pork shanks or grilled rib eye steaks. After dinner try it with a black forest chocolate cake or an assortment of hard cheeses.
Cheese Pairing:
Roncal
