Description:
Insolia is a truly complex white wine from Sicily. It can be spelled two ways, Insolia or Inzolia, and is often spelled both ways in the same article. It is also called Ansonica in Tuscany. Suliccènti, is the dialect of eastern Sicily, which means "sun from the west" and the grapes are grown on westward facing slopes allowing the grapes to bask in the warm Sicilian afternoon sun. The Terre di Giurfo estate is also known for olive oil production.
Winery:
The estate consists of 90 acres planted to indigenous varietals of Insolia, Nero d"Avola and Frappato and olive trees. Giurfo is an ancient land, buried in a picturesque landscape, one of the most amazing in the entire south eastern side of Sicily, along the Dirillo River Valley, between the town of Licodia Eubea and the Iblea province. The winery's faithfulness to ancient winemaking techniques as well as their well-researched cutting edge technologies, push their wines to the forefront of Sicilian enology. The estates soils are optimal for the production of these indigenous varietals. Soil, sun and ancient techniques all come together to produce a wine of exceptional quality and must be tried.
Vinification:
The grapes are harvested from the first to mid September, hand picked and pressed to stainless steel tanks. The grapes are then fermented at 28⁰C and left to age sur lee in the stainless steel tank. The wine is then bottled the first of March following the harvest.
Bouquet or Aromas:
The color is a brilliant clear pale yellow with the slightest green tint. There are notes of fresh wildflowers, Meyer lemons, tropical fruit and hints of jasmine. This wine is full of ripe fruit with forward aromas that are complex, alluring, refreshing and aromatic. You can not help but wonder how intriguing this wine will be with the first sip. The exotic fruit shows the pedigree of this indigenous varietal.
Taste:
On the palate you will find well-balanced acidity, bright minerality and a long floral finish. The tropical fruit is full and rich in the mouth with a very fresh, racy acid that lifts the fruit flavors and delivers a real mouth feel, that lingers for several minutes and forces you back to the glass for another taste. If you are into exotic tropical fruits, then you need to try this wine.
Pairings:
Insolia pairs well with grilled fish, pesto dishes, fresh fruits and vegetables. Try this wine with a hearts of palm salad, vichyssoise soup, penne with zucchini and fresh herbs, crab cakes, almond crusted chicken, clams in basil broth or a beautiful soft cheese plate.
Cheese Pairing:
Brillat-Savarin Affinée
