Description:
Pinotage is the result of a cross between the Pinot Noir and Hermitage (Cinsault) grape varieties. It was created by Professor Abraham Perold, of the University of Stellenbosch, in South Africa in 1924. At that time Cinsault was know as Hermitage in South Africa. Vino Con Brio grows Pinotage in Lodi because the microclimate is very similar to Cape Town, South Africa. In addition, both areas have a sandy based soil and heat summation table.Vino Con Brio is now the largest grower of Pinotage outside of South Africa. The 2005 Pinotage received a 98 points at the California State Fair.
Winery:
Vino Con Brio is a boutique winery owned by the Matson family in Lodi, California. In 1999, the family bonded their winery and Mike, Renae and Anne Matson are proud to bring you their eclectic estate grown wines. They are the only winery outside South Africa to be members of the Pinotage Society of South Africa. Vino Con Brio Means "Wine with Passion" and is the goal and dedication of the family and their winemaker, Paul Wofford. Paul is driven to create crafted fruit forward wines true to their varietal character. The grapes were handpicked from the Karma vineyard on September 8 and 9, 2005 and bottled on February 26, 2007
Vinification:
Hand harvested and hand sorted to ensure only the best grapes are used. The grapes are fermented in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks and pressed to dryness. The grapes were then inoculated with a specialty yeast usually only used for Pinot Noir production. Minimal racking and cellaring were used to allow the wine to mature fully with sixteen months of barrel aging utilizing 40% new French oak barrels.
Bouquet or Aromas:
Vino Con Brio's Pinotage smells like Pinot Noir on steroids with exotic aromas that are typical of this South African variety. The aromas have rich notes of blackberry, blueberry, cranberry, sweet oak and peppery spice
dominate the forward expressions of the wine.
Taste:
On the palate one continues to experience the black berry fruits, the sweet oak and spice that dominate and is typical of their Lodi Pinotage. The finish is full bodied, yet supple with hints of smokiness.
Pairings:
This wine makes a great accompaniment to wild game, duck, beef or pork. Other great pairings are cedar plank salmon, rich stews of fish or beef and pasta dishes with a rich tomato sauce.
Cheese Pairing:
Pecorino Toscano Stagionato
