Description:
This rare production from the Penedes region of Spain, is a brilliant expression of the Xarello grape. Fermented in chestnut barrels. Made from 50 year old Xarello vines growing in the natural bush style in the mountains above the Mediterranean. This is a very unique wine.
Winery:
The Estate of Clar de Castanyer consists of less than ten acres of Xarello vineyards. The wine is hand-crafted in small batches in the winery that dates back 500 years. This winery is very small and its major production is the Xarello grape with a total production of only 3,000 bottles.
Vinification:
The grapes are hand picked, pressed and fermented in chestnut barrels. It is bottled after fermentation and aged for a few months before being released to the market.
Bouquet or Aromas:
Pale gold color, this wine exudes aromas of toasted almonds, dry fig, and apricot with notes of nutty pear, peach pit and yellow plum that is complemented by honeysuckle and dusty minerals to finish the elegant nose. The use of chestnut barrels imparts the wonderful toasted nuts and stone fruit pit flavors that are very unique.
Taste:
On the palate you experience flavors that are both round and refreshing, showing its character in the form of toasted nuts, spice, and dried fruit. Dried pit fruit flavors are reminiscent of Roussanne, with a gentle acidity providing lift. Again the chestnut barrels add that extra punch of nuts and stone fruit flavors that can't be missed.
Pairings:
On the dry side, this wine shows bright acidity while retaining a roundness that makes it a perfect pairing for many fish dishes with enough body to stand up to lighter meat and game fare. This would be great with a variety of richer seafood preparations.
Cheese Pairing:
Roncal
