Description:
La Tunella "Selènze" Rjgialla comes from the D.O.C. Colli Orientali del Friuli in the northeastern corner of Italy, bordered by Austria and Slovenia and is one of Friuli's great indigenous white grape varietals. In the language of the people of Fruili the name "Selènze" means "Excellence" and is the essence of this great wine. La Tunella is made from 100% of the Ribolla Gialla grape varietal. In 1993, the Zorzettig family made the decision to change thename from the Livio Zorzettig Estates to La Tunella Winery. La Tunella was chosen because it is the place named for the hamlet and hills very near the winery.
Winery:
The winery was started in the early 1960s by Livio Zorzettig and his family with 40 hectares of land, of which 23 hectares (57.5 acres) were planted mostly to grape vines native to the region. But a few months after the purchase, Livio passed away. Gabriella and her two sons, Massimo and Marco, then 14 and 12 years old, decided to carry on the family business as Livio had wanted. Today the family is responsible for over 70 hectares of vineyards, more than triple the original land their father started with. In the 1990s the winery was reinvigorated, the oldest vineyards were replanted, new land was acquired, new varieties were introduced, the winery building and cellar was completely rebuilt and a new welcoming showroom and tasting room was opened.
Vinification:
The grapes are harvested at the peak of ripeness, de-stemed and gently pressed. The juice is then cold stabilized and then a fermentation stock, prepared 3 - 4 days earlier from selected best grapes of the same variety is added. The must then ferments in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature for about 30 to 40 days. Once fermentation is complete, a lengthy series of batonnage is carried out to produce a naturally stable, well-rounded, full-bodied wine. After this long sur lie aging process, the wine is bottled the second week of March.
Bouquet or Aromas:
La Tunella Rjgialla 2006 features a crystalline straw-yellow color with green reflections. An elegant and intense bouquet, floral, fruit and fragrant, with great class and consistency. The nose spans across notes of acacia, plum, yellow peach and green apple. There is also a hint of citrus that rounds out this great white varietal from Fruili. If you are a white wine lover, this wine is a must buy.
Taste:
The palate is intense and full with a supple body, echoing the wine's varietal character, while also being dry and pleasantly fresh. The flavors of plum, yellow peach and green apples are quite present with a crisp balance of fruit. The long finish develops pleasing notes of lemon that accompany an elegant and slightly aromatic aftertaste.
Pairings:
Serve slightly chilled on its own or with cold antipastos, sweet and sour foods, vegetables, delicate fish dishes and soups. Great with Asian foods. Try risotto with asparagus or veal strips braised with shallots and carrots.
Cheese Pairing:
Taleggio
