Description:
Arneis is an ancient grape that comes from the Roero hills in Italy's Piemonte region, north of Alba. Arneis the grape translates to "whimsical" also "rascally" or "a little crazy", no doubt from the fact that this grape has a reputation of being quite difficult and ornery to grow. History has it that Arneis dates back to the 16th or 17th century and legend has it that it was first made into a sweet wine for the Savoias, the royal family from Turin. Also, it was said that the wine was used to toast the grand celebration at Carnival in those days.
Winery:
Palmina Winery began in 1995 and is owned by Steve and Chrystal Clifton. The winery is located in Lompoc, California. Palmina is named after Steve's great friend Paula who taught him the love of the Italian lifestyle. After Paula succumbed to breast cancer Steve found that her given name was Palmina and the winery was then named in her honor. Palmina's Arneis is grown at the Honea Vineyard in the "Alamo Pintado Corridor" of the Santa Ynez Valley. The rolling hills, sandy alluvial soils of the vineyard together with warm sunny days followed by cool, crisp evenings mature the grapes to their perfect ripeness.
Vinification:
At the winery, the grapes are pressed and set to fermentation and then into a combination of stainless steel and oak. This is the only white wine at Palmina that sees barrel fermentation. The just fermented juice is placed into 1/3 stainless steel, 1/3 neutral French oak barrels and 1/3 new Gamba 500-liter puncheons. The Arneis is bottled in the spring and then allowed to rest in the bottle for three months.
Bouquet or Aromas:
The wine is an inviting pale gold hue in the glass and the 2007 Arneis is astoundingly aromatic. A bouquet of honeysuckle and violets is laced with hints of lavender and talc. This feminine nose is delicate in a forthright way with multiple layers that just keep evolving from the glass.
Taste:
Lilting acidity and freshness awakens the palate and envelopes the taste buds with harmonic layers of Kaffir lime, wild fennel and then red Anjou pear, Fuji apple and the characteristic marzipan, almond and wild herb finish. Full bodied and agreable, as one might expect from this individualist Arneis grape.
Pairings:
Arneis pairs beautifully with savory dishes, like pasta, chicken casserole, rich winter soups. Seafood dishes of salmon, swordfish, cioppino's and gumbo. Also hearty fare such as risottos, stews, and mild wild game.
Cheese Pairing:
Ossau-Iraty Fermier
