Description:
The Barbera grape can be traced back to the 1300's in Italy, and the Honea Vineyard in Santa Ynez was Planted in 2003, a mere 700 years later, there are striking similarities between the geography and climate of the two regions. The Santa Ynez Valley with its cool east-west winds of ocean breezes and warm desert winds are quit similar to Fruili with the cool breezes from the Alps and the warm winds from the Ligurian sea. In both cases, this unique type of microclimate offers cool nights for acidic balance, warm days for grape growth and a long growing season, ideal for Italian varietals such as the much loved Barbera.
Winery:
Palmina Winery began in 1995 and is owned by Steve and Chrystal Clifton. The winery is located in Lompoc, California. Palmina is named after Steve's great friend Paula who taught him the love of the Italian lifestyle. After Paula succumbed to breast cancer, Steve found that her given name was Palmina and the winery was then named in her honor. Palmina's Barbera is grown at the Honea Vineyard in the "Alamo Pintado Corridor" of the Santa Ynez Valley. The rolling hills, sandy alluvial soils of the vineyard together with warm sunny days followed by cool, crisp evenings mature the grapes to their perfect ripeness.
Vinification:
After hand harvesting at dawn, the grapes were transported to a cool room at the winery to preserve the "just picked" freshness. The grapes were pressed and fermented for two weeks and then placed in French oak barrels, 20% were new and from Italy's Gamba cooperage. The wine remained in barrel for 20 months to lengthen tannins and introduce the sweeter tannins from the oak, and was bottled in the spring of 2008. An additional six months of bottle age occurred prior to release.
Bouquet or Aromas:
A dark brick color, surrounded by scarlet edges. Heady aromas of spice, wild strawberry, bing cherry compote, and bright, fresh, black fruit demand the first taste. Very complex fresh fruit with hints of butter popcorn, butter and faint dried herbs. Hints of cassis and wild mushrooms are perfectly integrated in its bouquet.
Taste:
On the palate more spice of fresh nutmeg, black currant, Chinese five-spice, cassis, dried mushrooms and framboise, all balanced by fine tannins and a lively acidity. On the finish, lingering notes of dark chocolate meld with ripe mulberry.
Pairings:
Barbera is a wonderful "food wine". It works with Italian sausage and roasted walnut risotto, venison with cherry-port sauce. Braised pork shanks with porcini mushrooms, braised oxtails with herbs, beef shanks with sausage ragu and Barbera-braised beef short-rib with herb roasted root vegetables.
Cheese Pairing:
Pecorino Toscano Stagionato
