Description:
Valle Reale is owned by Leonardo Pizzolo and the estate was founded in 2000. The Valle Reale winery's 130 acres of vineyards are located in the highlands of central Italy, about a 90 minute drive from Rome and only 55 kilometers from the Adriatic coast. The estate is located at about 1,000 to 1,500 feet above sea level on the edge of the Gran Sasso National Park, The Laga Mountains and the Majella National Park. The Pizzolo family have roots in the native soils of the Abruzzo region. They operate two trout farms in nearby Majella as part of their agro-industrial business.
Winery:
Vigne Nuove "new vines" Trebbiano d'Abruzzo is grown on the estate vineyard of Capestrano that is 24.6 acres. The soil composition is calcareous clay and limestone with an underlying level of pebbles. The vine training method is the Guyot system and the vineyard is at the 1,200 foot level. There are 2,712 vines per acre with an eastern exposure. The vineyard was planted in 2002.
Vinification:
The grapes are handpicked in crates around the last 10 days of September. The grapes then go through a light maceration period of about 12 hours in stainless steel tanks to allow the fruit to intensify before fermentation. The fermentation period is about 40 days at a temperature of 57 - 61 degrees F. The wine is then allowed to age in the stainless steel tank on the lees before being bottled.
Bouquet or Aromas:
A light straw yellow in color with a very faint hint of a green hue, the wine is delightfully fragrant with rich aromas of citrus, orange rind, white pepper and fresh flowers. This Trebbiano has full-throttle aromas from the cold maceration of the grapes with the skins of fully ripe fruit.
Taste:
On the palate, the wine is zesty and crisp with full round body that is supported by a pleasant acidity. Well-balanced notes of citrus, lime, orange rind, white pepper and floral flavors. This is a wine that is great by the glass and incredibly food-friendly.
Pairings:
Valle Reale Trebbiano goes well with grilled white meats, fish dishes, and shellfish. A great wine for Sunday brunch, balancing the flavors of fish, shellfish and omelettes. This is a wonderful wine to have with sushi, the fruit and acidity complement the flavors of the raw fish.
Cheese Pairing:
Brillat-Savarin Affinée
