Description:
Over 3000 years ago Greek settlers immigrated to the volcanic slopes near Mount Massico and the volcano of Roccamonfina in what is now the region of Campania. In this area, the famous Roman wine Falerno was created and where vines were first raised off the ground on poles called falangas. In the 1950's Paolo Avallone re-established the native grapes of Aglianico, Piedirosso and Falanghina. Villa Matilde was established in the 1960's and the first vintage was in 1976 after re-establishing all the vineyards in the area with new cuttings.
Winery:
The property is 272 acres with 173 acres under vine and is divided into two farmsteads; Tenuta di San
Castrese and Tenuta di Parco Nuovo which is closer to the coast. Falerno Del Massico DOC Bianco was first released in 1976 and is 100% Falanghina and can easily age 3 years or more. The vineyard is located in Tenute di San Castrese, at Sessa Aurunca and the terrain is volcanic, with abundant phosphorus and
potassium. The vineyards were planted between 1963 and 1992, at an altitude of almost 500 feet above sea level, with a vine density of 4,500 to 4,800 vines per hectoliter.
Vinification:
The grapes are cryomacerated to obtain the best aromatic and extraction of flavor. This is followed by a cold fermentation of the must at a controlled temperature of 64 to 68 degrees for about 15 days. Then 3 months in stainless steel to settle the must and mature the flavors before bottling.
Bouquet or Aromas:
Color is straw yellow. The nose shows a depth of ripe fruit, notably pineapple, bananas, peaches, pears, flowers and rose petal with delicate notes of sage leaf and vanilla.
Taste:
The palate is balanced, rich, velvety but crisp with distinct finesse of pineapple fruit, banana, litchi nut, pear, peach and apple. The acidity is well balanced with the fruit and delivers a pleasant dry flower and herb notes on the finish showing its age ability.
Pairings:
This wine makes a great summer patio or picnic wine with shell fish appetizers. Works well with boiled fish and crustaceans in a rich broth like fish stew. Great with a risotto made with vegetables and fish. Also try this wine with youir favorite chicken dish or light pasta plate. A real crowd pleaser with age ability.
Cheese Pairing:
Taleggio
