Description:
Don Pascual Harriaque, a Basque immigrant, first introduced Tannat to Uruguay in 1870 from his native town in the Maridan Valley of southwestern France. It suited the native soil and climate so perfectly it soon became the national grape of Uruguay. Considered to be an exotic grape, Viņedo de los Vientos Tannat variety is a very colorful and powerful wine, with delicate but notable tannins. This allows the wine to age gracefully. The "Platinum Tannat" is known to develop deep rich aromas and a vigorous complexity on the palate. Like Shiraz for Australia, Melbec for Argentina and Sauvignon Blanc for New Zealand, Tannat is the wine of Uruguay.
Winery:
The Viņedo de los Vientos property has been in the Fallabrino family since 1947. With an aim to produce great wines in small quantities, the Fallabrino family completed, in 1998, an ultra modern winery with stainless steel tanks, pneumatic presses and French oak barrels. Despite these modern tools they like to make wine with forgotten or less-known old winemaking techniques. Over the past 17 years the vineyards have been completely replanted transforming the vineyards into a world class viticultural property. Viņedo de los Vientos translates into "Vineyard of the Winds" and is located where the river Plate Estuary, the largest in the world, and the Atlantic Ocean meet. This provides clean cool ocean breezes and the ideal climate for the maturation of fine wine grapes.
Vinification:
The Tannat grapes were hand picked and was put through a cold maceration for 4 days, then through a 7 day fermentation. After which the wine was allowed to go through a second malolactic fermentation. The wine was then aged in new French oak barrels for 3 months before bottling.
Bouquet or Aromas:
The Tannat grapes were hand picked and put through a cold maceration for 4 days, then through a 7 day fermentation after which the wine was allowed to go through a second malolactic fermentation. The wine was then aged in new French oak barrels for 3 months before bottling.
Taste:
On the palate, a powerful hint of blackberry and delicate notes of toast, backed with a long finish of intense dark fruit and firm, but polished tannins, defining a true Tannat expression. You can experience the game like nature of this varietal with its pine nut finish enhancing the warm marmalade fruit coating on the palate.
Pairings:
Best paired with rich red meats, stews, game birds and rich sauces made with mushrooms. Great with that winter pot roast, holiday beef roast or that red meat sauce Lasagna. This wine would match very well with a great barbequed turkey for the holiday.
Cheese Pairing:
Montgomery Farmhouse Cheddar
