Description:
The Albariño vineyard is planted on a windy hillside of the Monterey Lucia Mountains. Like the grapes native growing region in Spain, this location is cool and foggy. The fruit hangs till late in the season so that its natural acidity is balanced with ripe flavors. The native growing region of Albariño is the Rias Baixes area of the Galicia region of northwestern Spain, north of Portugal. Albariño is considered to be the primary quality dry white wine of Spain. The grape is also grown in Portugal where it is known as Alvarunho.
Winery:
Cambiata winery is an independently owned winery. Wine maker Eric Laumann has been making wine for 25 years and when the opportunity arose for him to start his own winery, he decided to pursue a project that he found stimulating but also one that would add a new dimension to food and wine pairing. The Albariño is planted on a tiny, well-drained bench land parcel just south of the Santa Lucia Highlands.
Vinification:
This wine is made anaerobically and fermented cold to preserve its complex fruit aromas. Post fermentation, the lees are stirred to build a richness that softens the acidity and balances the wine.
Bouquet or Aromas:
The color a brilliant pale yellow, with fragrant scents of tangerine, peach and clove. In the nose, the citrus and spice aromas are complex but not overpowering. This Cambiata Albariño has forward aromas like Viognier,
richness similar to Chardonnay and the crispness of Pinot Gris.
Taste:
On the palate the wine has rich, crisp acidity with the flavors of stone fruit and subtle spices. This is a rich aromatic wine that begs for food.
Pairings:
The Albariño grape is the white wine of the sea villages of northwestern Spain. This is the perfect wine for seafood. It is a great match for fresh or smoked fish, oysters and shellfish. This wine also complements dishes
such as stuffed poblanos, spicy tapas or artichokes.
Cheese Pairing:
Swiss Cave Aged Gruyère
