Description:
Ruchè, is a century-old vine of unknown origin though it is said to have been imported from France early last century. There are many legends on the origin of the name, but the most reliable one tells of a farmhouse, named "Rocca" (rock) where some friars used to make a sweet wine for the people of the nearby town Poggio Castel, hence the name "Ruchè". In the late 1970s, Don Glacomo Cauda, the parish priest of Castagnole Montferrato, became famous for his wine. In 1980, Giuseppe Cavallero uprooted a hectare of Barbera vines and replaced them with the priest's new variety. This became the first plantings of Ruchè at Scurzolengo. The 'Na Vota on the label translates to "olden times".
Winery:
During this same time period, construction began on a new, modern winemaking cellar, located in the middle of the estate vineyards, with up-to-date equipment capable of producing Ruchè to the highest quality possible. As a result Ruchè was given it's own DOC status in 1987 and in fact, can be produced only in a very limited area, just outside the boundaries of its town of birth. In the early 1990s, the two Cavallero brothers, Claudio and Franco began to take over the reins of their fathers enterprise. In 1992, the brothers renamed the estate Cantine Sant'Agata, named after a small votive marker opposite the winery erected by a wealthy local family in gratitude for divine favor.
Vinification:
The wine is a blend of grapes from four vineyards with different characteristics. The grapes are hand picked, de-stemmed and soft pressed. The fermentation with skins lasts 14 to 16 days at a temperature of 28-30 degrees C and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel. In spring, the wine is micro-oxygenated with a special piece of equipment that breathes a selected quantity of oxygen into the wine. This technique creates a micro-oxidation, as occurs in the barriques, avoiding added wooden scents or notes that could affect the wine.
Bouquet or Aromas:
The color of the wine is a very bright plum red with hints of violet, hay and vanilla sensations on the nose. The wine is full of aromatic spices of cumin, cardamom and pepper. The grapes ripen to a very sweet rich character and is handled very delicately to preserve the aromatic nuances of the Ruchè grape.
Taste:
Warm-bodied to the palate, this wine delivers all the aromatic characters of the spices, violet, hay and vanilla. The wine exhibits a perfect balance, a great delicacy and a long lingering persistence bringing you back to the glass over and over.
Pairings:
It's a spicy wine which perfectly matches with any aromatic spicy dish. Excellent with game: deer, wild boar, rabbit or with beef or lamb cooked in the same wine. Try, marinated skirt steak, grilled sausage and onion panini, seared rib-eye steak, Argentinean beef short ribs or a great smoked brisket sandwich.
Cheese Pairing:
Shropshire Blue Colston Basset
