Description:
The Albariño grape is the primary grape used in making the dry white wine of the Rías Baixes area of the Galicia region of northwestern Spain. The Rías Baixas area is directly north of Portugal along the Atlantic Ocean. In 1988 the D.O. Rías Baixas was established as part of an ongoing movement to recuperate and assure authenticity. Albariño is considered to be the primary quality dry white wine of Spain. The grape is also grown in northern Portugal's Minhos region where it is known as Alvainho.
Winery:
In 1984 a farm named Morgadío in the Rías Baixes sub district of Condado do Tea near the Aldea of Albeos was consolidated from multiple existing owners and planting began. The vineyard area was gradually expanded to its current 50 acres. Just in time for the 1988 harvest, the Méndez family, at Morgadío, finished a state-of-the-art gravity-flow facility at the bottom of the vineyard amphitheater which includes pneumatic presses and isothermic stainless steel tanks. The soil of the vineyard is of brilliantly-reflective granite sand that helps maximize the Albariño's concentration. Morgadío means "Only Son" in Gallego.
Vinification:
The grapes are hand picked and vinified in stainless steel tanks at the peak of ripeness to ensure their rich tropical flavors. Fermentation is cool and focused on developing the rich quality of the fruit. A short time in the bottle to finish rounding out and balancing the flavors.
Bouquet or Aromas:
Light pale gold color, with racy tropical fruits, mango, white peach, papaya, pineapple and very floral. One can pick up a bit of quince and some minerality that balances well with all the fruit. Albariño's are at their best when the aromas are focused and aromatic. You just can't what to taste it.
Taste:
The great tropical fruit aromas carry through on the palate with mango, pineapple, papaya, peach kiwi and wonderful floral notes with a hint of coconut. This wine has a lot going on as you taste it but it has very good balance and the layers of flavor are very appealing. The quince and minerals are well balanced with the acid giving you excellent structure and a great fruit forward finish.
Pairings:
Albariños of this quality will go great with a quite varied fare of fine food from Indian dishes with curry, to Asian, seafood such as scallops, shrimp and fish with a nice spicy preparation. A great summer wine. Sushi and other spicy Asian dishes work well and balance out the spice with its great fruit structure.
Cheese Pairing:
Red Leicester
