Description:
Friuli is located in the northeastern corridor of Italy, where the German, Slavic and Italian cultures create some of the world's greatest white wines. Bragging rights go to those winemakers who craft the most intriguing, complex, and sophisticated white wines. These white wines are known through-out the world as "super whites" and are crafted so that their exotically aromatic, crisp, yet full-bodied character continues to evolve and become more intricate with age. At Palmina, owner/winemaker Steve Clifton took this challenge of a super white one step further, by crafting a blend that expresses each of these grapes and blended them together to reflect their sense of place. One site, three grapes, with scrupulous attention to vinification and blending crated one wine.
Winery:
Palmina Winery began in 1995 and is owned by Steve and Chrystal Clifton. The winery is located in Lompoc, California. Palmina is named after Steve's great friend Paula who taught him the love of the Italian lifestyle. After Paula succumbed to breast cancer Steve found that her given name was Palmina and the winery was then named in her honor. Palmina's Bianco Unica is grown at the Honea Vineyard in the "Alamo Pintado Corridor" of the Santa Ynez Valley. The rolling hills, sandy alluvial soils of the vineyard, together with warm sunny days followed by cool, crisp evenings, mature the grapes to their perfect ripeness.
Vinification:
The 2007 Bianco is composed of three white varietals; Arneis, Tocai Friulano and Pinot Grigio. Each was harvested by hand and fermented separately. While the Tocai and Pinot Grigio were vinified in stainless steel with no malolactic fermentation, the Arneis was placed into neutral oak barrels and allowed to go through this second fermentation. The wines were blended with ⅓ of each varietal, put back into stainless steel, and allowed to marry the flavors for an additional two months before being bottled in the summer of 2008.
Bouquet or Aromas:
Bianco Unica struts its heritage with a brilliant and steely pale yellow-gold color. On the nose, the mineral laden soils of Honea provide a backbone of flint that is overlaid with subtle white rose, kaffir lime, passion fruit and hints of white pepper spice.
Taste:
The first sip reveals playful acidity and citrus notes of blood orange and lemon. Chalky undertones from the limestone join with an exotic note of kumquat, dragon fruit and a slice of pineapple. Lingering green-tea and lemongrass-thyme refreshes and satisfies, begging for another taste.
Pairings:
Bianco Unica is an age able white wine and an excellent complement to a meal. A fresh corn chowder, lobster tacos, chicken under brick, white four cheese pizza, open faced turkey burgers, cauliflower soup and other fun summer dishes.
Cheese Pairing:
Coach Farm Triple Crème
