Description:
The first red wine released by Simonsig in 1970 was a Pinotage. Today, Redhill Pinotage is a selection of the best new oak-matured wine from the famous red hills of the Simonsig Estate. Pinotage is the result of a cross between the Pinot Noir and Cinsault grape varieties. Pinotage was created by Professor Abraham Perold, of the University of Stellenbosch, in South Africa in 1924. Pinotage can be made in three typical styles, light and fruity like Beaujolais, rich and complex like Zinfandel or Cotes du Rhone, or refined and restrained like Bordeaux. The 2007 Simonsig Pinotage is in the style of a great Cotes du Rhone with a bit of brassy Zinfandel highlights.
Winery:
Simonsig Vineyard consists of 210 hectares (518 acres) at the foothills of the Simonsberg mountains in the heart of the Stellenbosch prime wine region of South Africa. The soil content is sandstone and decomposed granite and shale and is considered to be the best soil for growing red wines because of good drainage and moisture retention capacity. The highest vineyard is 260 meters (850 feet) above sea level. The region has a Mediterranean maritime climate with an average annual rainfall of 700mm or 27 inches. 75% of the rain falls in the winter months of May and August. Harvest time is in the months of February and March.
Vinification:
Picking started in early February with 2 days of cold soak, followed by yeast inoculation and a short but intense 3 day fermentation in traditional open top fermenters called "kuipe" with manual punching of the cap every two to three hours to give ample extraction of fruit and color. The berry size was noticeably smaller which also gave excellent concentration of color and fruit. Malolactic fermentation took place in barrel and the wine received four rackings before bottling. The wine was matured 16 months in 100% new oak, 79% French and 21% American white oak.
Bouquet or Aromas:
The color is dense, opaque, with a black center and a youthful cherry rim. The perfumed nose is filled with aromas of mulberry and raspberry fruit with serious, but subtle, spicy oak. There is a distinct note of forest floor earthiness that is balanced beautifully with the plumy fruit and dry spices. Pinotage sometimes has an astringent off aroma that is sometimes detracting, but not this pinotage, full of fruit and balanced tannins.
Taste:
On the palate the fruit shows delicious density and persistence in a framework of fine grained tannins and crushed berry fruit on the middle palate. The ripe rounded tannins provide an ample structure to allow further development in the bottle. These ripe tannins keep the natural sweet flavors of the Pinotage beautifully balanced, leaving a subtle dry finish in the mouth. A stand out Pinotage that will age and reward you for 6 to 10 years.
Pairings:
A great wine for hearty meat dishes such as rare roast beef or venison, Italian red sauce meals and flavorful cheese. Try this wine with Ostrich steaks or a hearty rich fish stew like Cioppino.
Cheese Pairing:
Pecorino Toscano Stagionato
