Description:
Just a short hour and a half to two hour drive from the California, Mexican border, you are transported to a serene haven known as the Valle de Guadalupe, the only major wine growing region in Mexico. Viñedos Malagón lies in this valley and has been a working ranch for over 100 years. This area was first settled by Russian settlers in the early 1900's looking for rich soils to farm. The ranch is now 400 acres of rolling hills and pristine vineyards. For the last few years, the Malagón family has focused on making it the best winery and Bed & Breakfast in the region. Some of the vineyards are over fifty years old and it is reflected in their wines.
Winery:
The vineyards on the property have been in existence since 1964, where Granache was primarily planted. The Malagón family purchased the property in 2000, uprooted some of the Grenache and planted Petite Sirah, Merlot and Cabernet. The winery was built in 2006, with a current capacity of 1500 cases. The family goal is to reach a production level of about 4000 cases. They are very interested in developing wines of great quality and balance to showcase their boutique wines from Mexico. The family also operates a 4 room Bed & Breakfast on the property that is quite tranquil. Equua is the derivation of the words equestrian, as evident by the beautiful horse on the label, and aqua, noting the abundance of natural well water on the property.
Vinification:
The grapes for the 2007 harvest were harvested in September. They were hand picked and allowed to rest slighty before crushing. The wines were fermented in small lots to control the quality of each parcel on the property. The wine then went through malolactic fermentation and then transferred to barrel to age for 12 months. The barrels used were American oak from Pennsylvania with some French new oak barrels. The wines were then tasted and blended to reflect the personality of each parcel on the property.
Bouquet or Aromas:
The color is a very vibrant, opaque purple, with wonderful aromas of strawberries, cherries and hints of vanilla. There is a nice balance of fruit and dried flowers with hints of spice that echoe a long and sweet fruit finish. This is a complex wine that begs to be tasted.
Taste:
On the palate, you are greeted by all the aromas you just experienced. Red berry fruits of strawberries, cherries, red plums, dried spring flowers and just that right hint of spice to balance it all out. The flavors are strong and complex with that attack of sweet fruit balanced with the proper amount of acidity and well refined and integrated tannins. This wine is very present to drink now but will age very nicely. A must try!!
Pairings:
Equua is so balanced it can be enjoyed with steaks, barbeques, roasts of beef, lamb or game. Try this wine with hearty dishes like Coq au Vin, Short Ribs or Cioppino. A beef, mushroom and barley soup, roasted goose with a red wine sauce or a lamb stew with root vegetables.
Cheese Pairing:
Shropshire Blue Colston Basset
