Torrontés
Torrontes is a grape from the Galician region of northwest Spain and it is commonly used in wines from the sub-region of Ribeiro just east of Portugal. In this region it is sometimes blended with the Triexadura or Albarińo grape. But Torrontes real fame comes from Argentina where it is considered the essence of Argentina. In Argentina the Torronte grapes are cultivated in the provinces of Catamarca, La Rioja, Mendoza, Salta, San Juan and Rio Negro with Mendoza being the primary growing region. Torrontes is thought to have been taken to Argentina by Basque immigrants. Torrontes is a very fragrant and aromatic grape with aromas of tropical fruit, peach pit, lychee nut, rose petals, white flowers, yellow apples and spice. On the palate one will experience the same bright fruits as in the aroma filled with spice and a very pleasant racy acidity. Torrontes is at its best when drunk young and is a great accompaniment to smoked meat, mild to medium-strong cheese, chicken and seafood dishes. The tropical fruit and floral scents bring out the flavors of freshwater fish, mussels, scallops and shellfish. Torrontes also holds up very well to spicy Chinese and Thai foods.
Description:
At the foot of the Andes Mountains, in the vast desert province of Mendoza sits Familia Zuccardi, Argentina's largest family-owned winery, founded in 1963 and one of the leading exports of Argentine wines. For almost 40 years, Familia Zuccardi has produced wines from the soils of Maipu and Santa Rosa districts of Mendoza. The development of the winery was a direct result of Alberto Zuccardi testing an irrigation system he had designed based on methods used in California. The Santa Julia Winery was established in 1998. Torrontés grapes, over the past century, have adapted itself to Argentina's high arid elevations and has become the indigenous grape of Argentina, much the same way Zinfandel has become the California grape. The vineyards are organically farmed with what the family refers to the vineyards as "the playground for insects and birds".
Winery:
The winery is equipped with all the necessary equipment to produce world class wine. From the stainless steel fermenting tanks to the cooling and maceration machines, pneumatic presses and rotating tanks. The Santa Julia winery is a state-of-the-art winery and the quality of the wine is reflective of their dedication.
Vinification:
The grapes are hand picked and transfer to the winery in 6kg. plastic trays to protect the grapes. They are hand sorted, going through skin maceration and fermented in stainless steel tanks, with selected yeasts, at 60⁰-65⁰F to protect the freshness of the grapes
Bouquet or Aromas:
The color is a brilliant silver yellow with pale green reflections on the edges with notes of rose, orange peel, white peach and an aromatic fruit salad with hints of chamomile and other herbs. It is slightly floral, with hints of lime, spice and jasmine. This wine has such great aromatics you think you are lost in a tropical garden in the middle of summer.
Taste:
On the palate, the wine is crisp dry with notes of mango, papaya and that hint of summer jasmine. The stone fruit flavors of white peach and pears are laced with hints of red grapefruit and the ever present aromatic herbs. This is a wine to kick back in your backyard in your favorite spot and just let that summer day go by and seduce you.
Pairings:
Pairing this wine is an experiment in contrast, with the crisp acidity, the forward fruit flavors you can work outside the box. Try matching it in dishes with a mild vinaigrette, like fried shrimp, calamari or fish sticks and a spicy vinegar dip. Great with a seafood salad, ceviche and fish tacos with salsa. You can also enjoy this wine with all fun fish dishes you may like to fix. A great starter wine for your next yard party, a picnic or just hanging out with friends.
